He was the only man I ever hero worshiped.

Re: 25 Years AGi Today
Best and hardest defender ever,if he played today to buy him it would be a world record bid and if I owned the club I would turn it down.he was quite simply the best.

Nor sure about Pele. I don't believe he was even that popular among his team mates, and his propensity for spouting half witted bollocks is not endearing.

Pele for sure

the amount of respect everyone had for him speaks volumes.

cant think of anyone in the game that ever commanded so much respect. puskas or matthews maybe?

Botham's another hero of mine, Vic Richards too. Billy Bonds too has that aura of greatness

Re: 25 Years AGi Today
I was lucky enough to meet the man briefly but also to be in his presence on a number of occasions. This was after his retirement. He was one of those rare people to have a genuine aura about them.

The only time I've seen anything even vaguely comparable with my own eyes was when encountering Ian Botham close up. Plenty of people go on about the electric atmosphere when Beefy came out to bat, swinging his arm. Well, he had it in person too. I'm not given to all that celebrity bollocks and I'm not in awe of any cunt just 'cos they're famous, but every eye in the room was drawn to him. I'm not shitting you - it was magnetic.

Bobby had the same thing, just in the opposite sense. I know everyone goes on about how calm and composed he was on the pitch, but even off it, I can promise you he radiated the same thing and it affected everyone around him. You'd almost swear time moved slower in his presence and I'm not fucking joking.

I'm not comparing the two men or their achievements, btw, but they are the only people I've encountered with that kind of discernible aura.

Met him a few times... funnily enough the majority in Southend when he was manager... first time was in his Sports Shop... would have been about 4 or 5 and me Dad took us down there to get a claret with blue piping track suit... me old man knew him as they was all from the same area (my Mum was babysat regularly by Morro's mum and dad) so had a chat whilst in the shop... he even threw in a West Ham sew on badge free of charge!! To say I was in awe was an understatement... I did remind him about it all those years later I bumped into him at Southend.... knew his son Dean relatively well... was landlord of our local pub (the Bell) in Westcliff... nice fella and always good for a lock in :-)

RIP Bobby. Should never have gone to Fulham and should have been a Club Ambassador the day after he retired. The owners of the club then should have hung their heads in shame at how he was treated.

And I hate him being used as a marketing "Moore than a Club" gimmick. He wasn't and isn't a tool to sell more hats and scarfs - he was England and West Ham's finest player.

There has never lived a poet capable of fully expressing what Bobby Moore meant and means to us.

An officer and a gentleman. The ultimate captain.

Viva Bobby Moore!

Re: 25 Years AGi Today
Forget the fact that he was a brilliant world class footballer or that he won the world cup and lifted it as Captain , what comes to the fore most about Bobby Moore when you here anyone speak of meeting him or even when you saw him on TV or heard him on the radio is what a thoroughly down to earth gentleman he was he never took anything for granted and probably saw himself as Bobby from Barking even though everyone else saw a big orange glow around him as they looked on in awe.
These day's people like him do not exist the money and fame game have destroyed the decency and humility that once existed in the beautiful game.
